Specialist presents Every 2 Weeks, new work by Kyler Pahang.
Pahang has created a series of paintings exploring the beauty that exists within the Barbershop; often seen as the last place for men to be men. Warts and all, Pahang highlights the tenderness, care, and closeness that come with the act of cutting hair and getting a haircut.
Pahang’s first line up came with insights. No longer was he emasculated for having long hair, he quickly became accepted as one of the boys. Entering that space, masking his own identity gave him a peculiar perspective. This place that rejects flamboyance is practicing self expression in beauty, love languages such as physical touch, acts of service, quality time and words of affirmation.
He questions the notion that a haircut is purely transactional but instead offers that the touch and conversations are transformational.
Kyler Pahang (b. 1998) is a Seattle-based Filipino artist and he received his MFA from the University of Washington in 2025.
